Khu vực Badlands, thuộc bang Utah, ở miền tây nước Mỹ, đúng như cái tên của nó - “đất xấu” - là một vùng đất nổi tiếng khô cằn, nơi đây cảnh vật hoang sơ vì không phù hợp với việc trồng trọt, chăn nuôi. Cảnh vật chẳng có gì hơn ngoài những dải đất nứt nẻ chân chim.

Nếu như điều kiện thiên nhiên ổn định thì mỗi năm một lần, nơi nứt nẻ vì thiếu nước này sẽ bừng lên những màu hoa sặc sỡ. Scorpion Weed và Beeplant, hai loại hoa vàng, tím thuộc họ xương rồng cho thấy sức sống của thiên nhiên tồn tại ngay cả những nơi khắc nghiệt khó tin nhất. Vào mùa xuân, khi độ ẩm đang ở mức cao nhất, những mầm cây vốn nằm im lìm trong những kẽ nứt chân chim bất ngờ đâm chồi, nở hoa. Tuy vậy, những cây hoa này chỉ sống được trong một thời gian rất ngắn.

Khi độ ẩm không còn đủ để chúng sinh trưởng nữa, những cây hoa sẽ dần héo rũ và chết khô. Vì vậy, cảnh hoa nở trên sa mạc ở Badlands là một khung cảnh rất hiếm có và ngắn ngủi, không dễ gì thấy được.
